Community Composting
Community Composting for
Loddiswell?
There seems to be quite a bit of enthusiasm in the village for a community composting scheme, particularly after the recent SHDC recycling and garden waste collection debacle. With this in mind, two of our group visited the Sustainable South Brent Community Composting Scheme to see how they go about things.
They have a very impressive set up and receive high volumes of garden waste, which produce large quantities of compost for the local community - for which a small charge is made.
It quickly became apparent to us that this is not a scheme to take on lightly and will take much organisation and careful planning as well as considerable fundraising. However, as South Brent have proved, it can be done.
A suitable site would need to be found - again this was where the visit was very useful as it made it very obvious to us that it would need to be an industrial site with hard standing. SHDC would visit regularly with heavy machinery to move and turn the compost, any sort of green field site would be quickly trashed and turned into a muddy quagmire. The site would also have to be secure, not just to protect equipment, but to prevent people turning up to dump waste unmonitored, resulting in it being put in the wrong place or, worse still, bringing the wrong sort of waste. The South Brent scheme is open to receive waste every Sunday 10am to 1pm and is run by a team of some 50 volunteers, with 3 on duty at a time. When not receiving waste on other days there are more tasks to perform: turning compost, sieving and bagging up the finished product etc. etc.
The good news is that South Hams District Council are proposing a scheme to use £200,000 to support community composting - to be discussed on 3rd March 2022

More discussion will be needed and it is likely that we will form a sub committee/working party to pursue this further. If you would be interested in helping with this, please email on the link below
